The mother was started on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in her second trimester. She went in to labor 5 weeks early, at 35 weeks. The other twin was born alive.&nbsp;<strong>At the time of delivery, the cause of stillbirth was unknown<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An interview with family members after the stillbirth (a verbal autopsy) indicated that&nbsp;<strong>the mother thought the baby suffered an injury during delivery<\/strong>&nbsp;that led to the stillbirth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uncovering the cause<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Blood, spinal fluid, and tissues of the stillborn&nbsp;<strong>baby tested positive for&nbsp;<em>Treponema pallidum<\/em>, the bacteria that causes Syphilis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Syphilis is a serious bacterial infection that is sexually transmitted and can be passed from a pregnant mother to her unborn baby. It is a cause of stillbirth.&nbsp;Because syphilis is treatable with penicillin, the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/259003\/9789241550093-eng.pdf;jsessionid=AB26093BE363DC9FD6DC5B0095D2B1C8?sequence=1\">World Health Organization recommends<\/a>&nbsp;that all women be screened for syphilis during pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pathology confirmed that\u00a0<strong>Syphilis was the cause of the stillbirth<\/strong>\u00a0with the bacteria,\u00a0<em>Treponema pallidum<\/em>, found in all of the types of tissues collected \u2013 liver, lung, brain, placenta, and umbilical cord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pathology images class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The CHAMPS team provided these results to the mother to ensure that she and her living baby were treated for syphilis.<\/strong>&nbsp;Neither of them had developed symptoms and both were doing well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This mother now knows what happened to the baby she lost even before its birth<\/strong>, and&nbsp;she and her living baby are healthier as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public Health Implications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The local CHAMPS team learned that there had been a<strong>&nbsp;shortage of syphilis testing kits<\/strong>&nbsp;that prevented&nbsp;this mother from having the recommended prenatal tests, even though she had regular visits with her doctor during her pregnancy.
