The baby required oxygen and other interventions to stay alive. She remained weak, with irregular breathing and a fever despite treatments in the hospital. The baby died just 1 day after she was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In very young infants<\/strong>, clinical signs of illness overlap.&nbsp;<strong>It can be hard to determine what went wrong.<\/strong>&nbsp;Did the newborn die of infection or other complications of childbirth?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group content-white\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left w-65 margin-auto\">Determining the Cause<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, almost all&nbsp;<strong>CHAMPS laboratory results were negative for possible infectious causes of death<\/strong>, except for signs of one bacteria,<em>&nbsp;E. coli,<\/em>&nbsp;found in a swab of the baby\u2019s rectum. This bacteria is commonly present after someone dies and, because it was not found in any of the baby\u2019s tissues, was thought unlikely to have contributed to this baby\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pathology from&nbsp;<strong>the baby\u2019s liver showed signs of stress, without signs of infection<\/strong>. Even though the pathology results were negative, these results valuably confirmed that the cause of death was not from an infection but from obstructed labor.
